Disaster Preparedness Save lives

Disaster Preparedness Save lives

I am Jagottara Mondol (40), live in a village named Durgapur. My husband has been died in 2000 remaining a son and a daughter. I had been passing very hard time with day laborer. My house was seriously damaged by a devastating flood in 2001. I was sheltered beside a highway with my two kids and it was raining. We were living there under a tent provided by an NGO having lots of sufferings like – congested of living space, scarcity of food, unavailable of safe drinking water and want of sanitation facilities. In the meantime the studies of my kids were stopped and sometimes we were remaining appetite. To meet up our food I used to pick up water lily and KAKRA from adjacent water bodies and sold it in a nearer market. Sometimes we used to boil water lily and took it without rice as one of our main food.
After a couple of months logged water was reduced and we returned to our home. Our house was broken down and we failed to repair it for want of money. We had been living in a tent from then. In 2012 Women Job Creation Centre has been formed a 15 members disaster management committee (Community Disaster Preparedness Committee) in our village including me. They organized different meetings and training on disaster preparedness system among the members. We learnt how we could reduce damages of life as well as wealth while any disaster occurred. We also learnt from the training what type of preparedness we should be taken pre and post situation of any disaster.
I used to preserve some foods and money before flood, built my house basement durable by extra mud, collected bamboo and other materials from my neighbors. After then all of our CDPC members were jointly made my house. Meanwhile further flood has been covered in our area, but our houses as well as other assets were not damaged, we had not to be settled beside the road and our necessary foods were preserved. So we didn’t suffer as earlier.
By the implementing of disaster preparedness related activities of WJCC we became aware enough on disaster preparedness to reduce damages during the hazards. We have changed our positive attitude on voluntary activities and realized to work jointly is too much needed while any obstacles happening.
